PUBLIC ART IN CAPE TOWN

In light of the recent debate about public art in Cape Town, I really enjoyed reading Roger Young's article about the Tokolos.

“Those who would call it vandalism are stuck in a strange idealistic bubble that is blind to the hierarchies of public space. We have billboards and advertisements that invade out public space. We are forced to look at Johnnie Walker ads even though we as the public never gave them permission to put that shit up … In a system in which we, as the people, have no right to creatively participate in public space, it cannot be seen as vandalism to reoccupy that space. This is what art should do – break down barriers. Money should not dictate the right to mould our city.”

So, my sister's friend Talana asked me to photograph her company's end of year function. The theme was Wild West and it was the cutest event that even featured a mechanical bull. I love Talana's style and touch for decor.

This post is especially for my brother because he deleted his Facebook account. But I really want him to see my Cape Town photos, which I got developed today.

He gave me the best advice and said, "Get all the cheesy shots out of your system".

I used my gorgeous little Olympus Trip 35 and Kodak Gold 400 ISO film.

COUNT DOWN

I made this for a friend of mine last year. She had just moved into her own apartment at the age of thirty, after moving around quite a lot. I stole the saying from a song...I don't remember which. Sometimes you meet someone and you know their heart is set in stone in a very specific place, and your home won't ever be theirs. 

LIFE ONLINE

Since moving back to Cape Town, I really miss having a good selection of furniture on offer. Living in Germany made me take weekend trips to IKEA for granted. As long as slow-walking couples, dreaming of imagined futures, and toddlers with tantrums could be avoided, life was good. I now also miss my weekend trips to flea markets or buying cheap second-hand furniture online.

Goodness me. Lifestyle products are expensive in Cape Town. I long for the sleek, clean lines of a Swedish-inspired design and I promise I won't laugh that it's mass-produced and a mere facsimile, at a shop whose brand pushes a fictitious Swedish lifestyle.
